Access to clean water and safely managed sanitation infrastructure

Background

  • Garissa, Mandera, and Wajir Counties are all severely water stressed, are lacking in permanent drainage systems (rivers, streams, tributaries). Their residents are highly dependent on natural and man-made water storage structures for their fresh water. (see graph 1).
  • The five counties also have inadequate sanitation. Garissa, Mandera and Wajir have between 1%-5% of their (mostly urban residents with access to connected sewers. Latrines serve the majority of North Eastern Kenya residents, though open defecation is still high (between 30%-47%). (see graph 2).
  • KISDA engages in projects that provide new or rehabilitate existing water and sanitation structures.

Water Projects

KISDA water projects are aimed at improving access to safe and clean water, increasing water supply, and managing water resources sustainably. Under these projects, we intervene on three fronts, that is;

  1. Construction of New and Rehabilitation of Existing Water Infrastructure: Providing assistance construction of new community wells, boreholes, pumps and storage tanks, and rehabilitation of existing infrastructure.
  2. Rainwater Harvesting: Providing expertise and infrastructure for collecting rainwater for domestic and agricultural use.
  3. Watershed Management: Protecting and managing the natural resources within a watershed area (natural springs, wetlands, rivers, etc).
